Worthy Walk Series – Week 17 (Ephesians 4:17-24)

Intro: The Worthy Walk, what is it? Why is this so important? Who is this New Man, how can I become a new man? We are a third race of people. YOU ARE DIFFERENT! I feel like a New Man!

Text: Ephesians 4:17-24 (NKJV)

“This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; 19 who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20 But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”

Let’s talk about how to put off or remove the Old man, what was your former conduct (I hope and pray) and help you put on the new man!

1. Understanding and Ignorance: Vs. 17-19

In today’s worthy walk series a person’s mind is the topic: so the question might need to be asked - “What are you thinking!” Scripture defines the unbeliever as an unregenerated person who lives in the futility of their mind. Futility being; Uselessness, Ineffectiveness, Pointlessness… This fallen state associates the natural state of man, the Old sin Nature is in control. “For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey God’s laws, and it never will.” Romans 8:7 (NLT)

“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)

Believers are not to walk as other men walk. Why? Because believers are new creatures in Christ Jesus, and the walk of other men does not please God. What is it that other men do that does not please God? This passage gives traits about unbelievers that displease God. Believers are to have nothing to do with any of these. They are never to return to the paths of their former life.

  • Unbelievers walk in the vanity of their mind.
  • Unbelievers walk with their understanding darkened.
  • Unbelievers walk alienated from the life of God.
  • Unbelievers are past feeling; that is, they reach a point where they no longer have feelings for God and His standard of morality.
  • Unbelievers give themselves over to sin.

Believers are not to walk in such a life. They are not to walk as other men walk.

Romans 1:21-22 (NLT) “Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.” Their understanding and ignorance blinded them! It alienated them.

2. Learning and Teaching: Vs. 20-21

“But you have not so learned Christ, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus.” If you have learned the truth it is JESUS!

The believer is to walk in Christ. He is not to walk as men walk. The reason is clearly stated: believers did not learn such a sinful life from Christ. Christ did not live a sinful a life, and He has not taught us to live a sinful life as other men live. If a man has heard Christ and been taught by Christ, then he has heard and been taught the truth. The Teacher is Christ Himself! If a person has really heard Christ speaking to their hearts, then what they heard was not the kind of life lived by unbelievers.

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased (deprived) mind, to do those things which are not fitting.” Romans 1:28 Learning is growing, growing in Christ never ends, you can never know it all, but you can know enough to be Godly, changed – SAVED!

The believer has received a change of life that results in a change in his walk. We are called upon to “put off”, once for all, the ways of the old man who is just growing worse day by day. The words “is corrupt” are present tense and speak of a corpse that lies rotting in the sun. Each day brings with it more evidence that the corpse is dead! We are called upon to “put on”, once for all, the new man, who had been created in righteousness and holiness. When the new believer comes to faith in Jesus, he learns a new way of life! He has experienced a change of heart that results in a profound change of mind. God puts a new desire within His children that makes them want to live differently than they used to live! The bottom line is this: the maturing believer looks different, acts different, walks different and thinks different than he did before!

3. Mind and Truth: Vs. 23-24

“And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”

The true walk is a walk in Christ, and a walk in Christ involves three actions.

The believer is to put off the old man: Vs. 22 “That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts.”

The believer is to be renewed in the spirit of his mind: vs. 23 “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.”

The believer is to put on the new man: Vs. 24 “And that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17

Conclusion: You don’t have to be ignorant you can understand. Allow the Holy Spirit to teach you and learn (grow) in the mind of Christ. The truth will set you free; you will become a new man! Be different, be a part of that 3rd race of people.
