Saints GO Marching on Series – 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:4

Intro: When you write down the word spirituality on a piece of paper and you erase the first three letters and the last three letters you end up with the word “ritual” The natural man would try to convince you that rituals are spiritual. A spiritual man is not a ritualistic person they are a relational person with their creator. To appreciate what spirituality is you could start by understanding what it isn’t. Spirituality is not anything that can be man-made.

Vance Havner once said: “One might as well discuss nuclear physics with a wooden Indian in front of a cigar store as to discuss spiritual things with a natural man.”

Text: 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:4 (NKJV)

“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ. 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not carnal?”

My series has been all about encouraging the saint to march on, Paul’s ministry at Corinth has been entangled with division and divisiveness; divisiveness is a terrible problem, one of the most damaging and devastating problems existing in the world. Divisiveness leads to anger, fights, divorce, murder, and war. One of the answers to solving divisiveness is to see ourselves as God sees us. When God looks at a person, He sees that person in one of three classifications; the natural, spiritual or carnal. Three doors to choose from, which door must you open and walk through to see the Godly – Man?

THE FIRST MAN THAT IS CLASSIFIED IS THE:

1. The natural man: Vs. 14

“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

A Sermon Delivered on Sunday Morning, September the 1st, 1861, by the Rev. C. H. SPURGEON, stated; Under the term “natural,” the apostle includes all those persons who are not partakers of the Spirit of God; it matters not how excellent, how worthy, how intelligent, how instructed they may be. If the Spirit of God hath not given to them a new and higher nature than they ever possessed by their creature birth, he puts them all down at once in the list of natural men. They are what they are by nature. They never professed to have received the Spirit of God. He puts them down, therefore, as natural men.

The natural man is the fallen and depraved man, the sinful and corrupt man, the aging and deteriorating man and the dying and doomed man. The natural man is the morally corrupt man, the man whose spirit is dead to God. He is a man with a human nature, and the human nature is all he has. His nature is human nature apart from God. It is a Christless human nature, a nature that will not believe and obey and live for Christ. It is life lived without the presence and influence of Jesus Christ.

The natural man's life and mind are spent focusing upon the natural, upon this world and not upon the spiritual; in God's eyes he is classified as the natural man. His heart welcomes only the world; it is closed to God. God is not welcomed into his life. The natural man considers the things of God foolishness. Why can the natural man not know spiritual things? Very simply because they are spiritually discerned. The word "discerned" means examined. Spiritual things have to be discerned by a living spirit, not by a natural man, not by a man who is primarily living by his animal nature. Spiritual things can be discerned only by a spirit that is living. Spiritual things can be investigated only by a living spirit, judged only by a living spirit, examined only by a living spirit and estimated and valued only by a living spirit.

“Having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.” Ephesians 4:18

THE SECOND MAN THAT IS CLASSIFIED IS THE:

2. The spiritual man: Vs. 15-16

“But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16 For "who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?" But we have the mind of Christ.”

SPURGEON defines the spiritual man different than the natural man. He says; On the other hand, all into whom the Spirit of God has come, breathing into them a new and diviner life, he puts down under the other head of spiritual men.

The spiritual man is a person in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. A person becomes spiritual because they received the Spirit of God and is living under the influence of the Spirit of God. When you receive Jesus Christ you are born again by the spirit of God. “Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:5-6

Within the spiritual man the Spirit of God enters and dwells within his body converting his body into a holy temple for God's presence. “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.” Romans 8:5-9

The man who is truly spiritual lives under the control of God's Spirit. The spiritual man is not understood by the natural man. The spiritual man has the "mind of Christ." This is the reason the believer can discern spiritual things: he has the "mind of Christ." This does not mean that the spiritual man knows all there is to know about Christ, but it means that his mind is focused upon God and the things of God just as the mind of Christ was. The Spirit of God pulls, draws, and stirs the mind of the genuine believer to spiritual things. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:5

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it"

THE THIRD MAN THAT IS CLASSIFIED IS THE:

3. The carnal man: Vs. 3:1-4

“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.

The carnal man is not spiritually mature; he is as a babe in Christ. The carnal man is a true believer. He is a babe in Christ, but he is deformed just like a deformed baby. He should be more mature, more developed spiritually, but he has not grown in Christ. The carnal man does not know Christ and the things of God like he should. His mind and behavior are not focused upon Christ like they should be. He has been a believer for years, but he knows little about Christ and God.

The carnal man has to be fed with milk and not the meat of the Word. This does not mean there are two sets of teachings, nor that there are two sets of beliefs, one for the learned believer and another for the unlearned. The same gospel is preached to all, and the same Word is studied by all; but some have paid attention, studied, prayed, and served Christ more than others. The spiritual believer knows and experiences more of the depth of spiritual things than the carnal believer, much more. The carnal believer has to be fed the very basics and not the depths of God's Word. “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” Hebrews 5:12

The carnal man is characterized by division. Division is striking proof that a man or a people are carnal, whether the division be in a church or in a family. Carnality is clearly seen in envying and strife. Envy leads to jealousy, and jealousy leads to division. When people become jealous of one another, they become divided and begin to strive or argue and wrangle with one another. Carnality is seen when believers begin to walk and act like men of the world.

Conclusion: We looked at three classifications of man, I mentioned three different doors you have the option of going through; the natural, spiritual or carnal. If you haven’t given this any thought you are already classified as one of these. The Godly man is the person who has received the spirit of God through a relationship with Jesus Christ. ARE YOU A GODLY MAN?

Illustration of Spiritual Growth: One night, a mother fixed a special meal for her family: turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, and apple pie for dessert. It was everyone’s favorite meal, especially when it came at a time other than Thanksgiving. The aroma filled the house, and as the children came in from playing they could hardly wait for dinner to begin. The last child appeared only a few minutes before dinner time and sat through the meal without eating, even though he especially loved those foods. Why? Because he had filled up on peanut butter at a friend’s house. In settling for something good, he had lost his appetite for the best.

The same applies to our spiritual appetites. Some people don’t have much of an appetite for spiritual truth because they have satisfied themselves with lesser things. The godly man loves the “all you can eat spiritual buffet!”
