Text: Proverbs 2:1-6 (HCSB)

1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 listening closely to wisdom and directing your heart to understanding; 3 furthermore, if you call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

"Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him." James 1:5 (HCSB)

Intro: It has been said, “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.” In watching average Christians, one sometimes wonders if most have any idea about the truth of a wonderful plan for their lives. How about the will of God for your life? Have you found that wonderful plan, and are you living according to it? I think of the puzzle someone might try to put together only to find several hours later when almost all the pieces are in place there is one missing. Or you have purchased this product and assembly is required and after much time is invested you are missing a part. Maybe it is the Marathon
you ran and came up 2/10’s of a mile short. Have you ever had someone say to you: “you were so close!” wouldn’t it be a shame if God said to you one day as you were soon to leave this world “you were so close!” But you never saw the big picture or plan God had for your life? Wouldn’t it be a shame if you didn’t know God’s will for your life? “You were so close!” but there was a missing piece, or all the parts just weren’t assembled. You never completed the race… DO YOU KNOW GOD’S WILL FOR YOUR LIFE? And if you do you will be complete nothing will be missing and the parts will be assembled, you will complete the race!

Application: God’s will comes with understanding.

1. The Need to Know God’s Will:

It doesn’t take long for us to find out that human experience shows us, messed up lives, mixed up marriages and unhappy personalities. I am sure if I asked all of you if you felt like you were messed up and mixed up most of you would agree that you were. I also realize that there could be several here today though you might not tell us you’re unhappy, your personality will not allow you to be happy. Now that sounds like something is missing. When you know God’s will, you will be happy there will be nothing missing, you’re not messed up!

The Bible shows us: That which is “perfect, good, and acceptable.” That which can be known.

Romans 12:1-2 (KJV) 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

In ancient times, people often sought their fortunes by seeking buried treasure. In our day, people might seek earthly treasure by playing the stock market. The book of Proverbs calls upon us to search for wisdom as a hidden treasure. And with wisdom you will understand God’s will for your life!

You can by your actions find yourself in one of two specifics areas: God’s directive will or His permissive will. With the permissive will you might just find that you are missing something.

"Keep asking, and it will be given to you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7 (HCSB)

2. The Finding of God’s Will: vs. 1-6

The steps to knowing:

1 Put a priority on God’s Word: “store up”. The Word of God is the only source of revelation
2. Be sincerely open to what God has for you: “listening closely”. Direct your heart to understanding.
3. Earnestly pray for God to reveal it to you: “call out to insight”. The passage speaks of Cry and Lift your voice.
4. Sincerely seek it through every possible means: “seek it like silver and search for it like hidden treasure”. The Word is superior, but it also can show in conviction, circumstance… Finding God’s will promises discernment and understanding.

3. Hindrances to Knowing God’s Will:

First hindrance is your self-will; you do not really want to know His will for it might conflict with your own. Another hindrance is the simple fact you don’t really care! Little harsh? Maybe, maybe not. Lets face it there is feelings that get in the way also, your one of those people who believe you have to wait for a special feeling, this can obscure the will of God. Don’t forget stress on having to follow feelings rather that fact.

Let’s look at the failure to do what we already know of God’s will, here are some common examples:

- Children obey parents
- Parents discipline children
- Do not marry the unsaved
- Immorality is wrong
- Be a witness - seek to win people to Christ
- Tithe
- Walk with the Lord

Your failure to know God’s will may really be a refusal to do it!

Conclusion: It is so crucial that you find the will of the Lord! His will involves your salvation. “He is not willing that any should perish” You must start at the beginning by being sure you know His salvation.

The Light turned yellow: The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.

After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally....I assumed you had stolen the car."

Priceless.
