Text: 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (HCSB)

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 We all, with unveiled faces, are reflecting the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Galatians 5:1 (KJV) “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Illustration: BONDAGE, REAL OR IMAGINED

Harry Houdini, the famed escape artist from a few years back, issued a challenge wherever he went. He could be locked in any jail cell in the country, he claimed, and set himself free in short order. Always he kept his promise, but one time something went wrong. Houdini entered the jail in his street clothes; the heavy, metal doors clanged shut behind him. He took from his belt a concealed piece of metal, strong and flexible. He set to work immediately, but something seemed to be unusual about this lock. For thirty minutes he worked and got nowhere. An hour passed, and still he had not opened the door. By now he was bathed in sweat and panting in exasperation, but he still could not pick the lock. Finally, after laboring for two hours, Harry Houdini collapsed in frustration and failure against the door he could not unlock. But when he fell against the door, it swung open! It had never been locked at all! But in his mind it was locked, and that was all it took to keep him from opening the door and walking out of the jail cell. Zig Ziglar

Intro: There is an urgency on the part of the Preacher to share the precepts of the Gospel: believe, love, obey… the preacher with clarity must reveal the veil of Christ Crucified! It is imperative that those who tried to live under the law see that they have a veil upon their hearts. This veil is taken away by the doctrines of the Bible about Christ. When any person is converted to God, then the veil of ignorance is taken away. The condition of those who enjoy and believe the gospel is happy, for the heart is set at liberty to run the ways of God's commandments. They have light, and with open face they behold the glory of the Lord. Christians should prize and improve these privileges. We should not rest contented without knowing the transforming power of the gospel, by the working of the Spirit, bringing us to seek to be like the temper and tendency of the glorious gospel of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and into union with Him. We behold Christ, as in the glass of his word; and as the reflection from a mirror causes the face to shine, the faces of Christians shine also. Or should!

Application: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

This Country fought for its liberty, men and women died sacrificing their own lives for the freedom of their family and Country. We cannot afford to forget where we came from and what we did to get here!

1. Christ Frees: vs. 17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

The Lord is the Spirit: The Lord and the Spirit are a part of the Godhead and their role is to show and reveal salvation to man and in turn to take hold of this knowledge gives you freedom!

- Christ frees the believer from the dominion of sin.
“For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under law but under grace.” Romans 6:14 (HCSB)
- Christ frees the believer from the law.
“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:18 (HCSB)
- Christ frees the believer from the bondage of fear.
- Christ frees the believer from the power of Satan, which is the fear of death.
- Christ frees the believer from the bondage of corruption.

The cause of freedom is the cause of God. Samuel Bowles

That’s pretty profound - the reason for God is to free us!

2. Christ Reveals: vs. 18 “We all, with unveiled faces, are reflecting the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

My wife did the special last week and she signed a song from Sandy Patty’s collection of favorites and the name of the song was “We Shall Behold Him” I can’t help but wonder if a lot of Christians really understand what the believer will behold! In beholding Christ, believers are transformed into His image. The phrase "we all" means believers, those who have turned to Christ... Those who have had the veil removed from their face, who stand face to face with the glory of the Lord.

When a believer receives Jesus Christ as his Savior, he is given the privilege to stand face to face with Christ. This simply means that he is given the privilege to know and understand Christ.

The phrase "open face" from the KJV (HCSB with unveiled faces) means that the believer is given the privilege of standing face to face with Christ, the privilege of knowing Christ personally and learning all about Him. There is no veil over the face or eyes of the believer, nothing to keep him from knowing the Lord.

Has Christ really been revealed to you? The object of the believer is to behold the glory of the Lord, to behold the Godhead and deity of the Lord, the splendor, brilliance, and excellence of His person and Being. Jesus Christ is the Son of God who became Man.
His "glory" refers to the glorious fact that He as the Son of God did become Man. When a person grasps this fact, he understands the "glory of the Lord," the incomprehensible fact that the Lord paid the supreme and ultimate price, the unbelievable price, for the salvation of man. He allows us to have freedom!

“The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 (HCSB)

The believer, however, never grasps the full glory of the Lord. No man, who is only finite and flesh, could ever understand the Lord, who is infinite Spirit. The believer only sees and understands the glory of the Lord as in a glass or a mirror. That is, he only sees a reflection of the Lord, not the full image. Presently, the believer is able to see the Lord only through the Word and the Holy Spirit; in the future, he shall stand face to face with the Lord throughout all eternity. Then he will know the Lord even as the Lord now knows him. Then we will truly Behold Him!

Love Chapter explains: “Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.” 1 Corinthians 13:12 (NLT)

3. Christ Transforms: Vs. 18 “We all, with unveiled faces, are reflecting the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.”

The believer is changed or transformed into the image of Christ from glory to glory. When we Behold or: grasps, understands, study, lay hold of, the glory of the Lord, the same glory is created in us. When the believer beholds the glory of the Lord, the believer progresses and grows from one stage of glory to a higher stage.

Conclusion: The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission. John F. Kennedy

“Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” were not designed to give the people of this land a legal threshold to the perversion of sin. But life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were viewed as gifts from the Creator, almighty God Himself to sustain us and free us from the yoke of our own sin.

“You are not slaves; you are free. But your freedom is not an excuse to do evil. You are free to live as God's slaves.” 1 Peter 2:16 NLT

Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

- Freedom is yoked to learning how to live. Freedom is Living Free in Christ.
