“BE OF GOOD CHEER!” Series: Week 5 - (2 Thessalonians 2:10-17)

Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:10-17 (NKJV)

“And with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.”

Intro: This example of the church of Thessalonica brings to reality the choice all of us must make and that choice or decision is; to choose to believe the lie or choose to believe the truth. Every year at this time the country celebrates the anniversary of the freedoms we won, or earned or sacrificed to achieve. We remember the past wars and all the men and woman who died to give us these freedoms. I believe this was a time in history where many who died for this countries freedom believed the truth. There is a serious battle for your soul going on right now! You must choose – to believe in “A Lie” or believe in “The Truth.” Challenge with that is, do you really know what the truth is?

Application: Good hope only comes by God’s Grace.

1. BELIEVE THE LIE: vs. 10-12

“And with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

This passage stands as a strong warning to all unbelievers. It reveals just who the followers of the antichrist will be. It shows who runs the risk of becoming a follower of the antichrist. They are the perishing, they are the persons who do not believe the truth, they are the deceived and they are the damned. Even while a follower of the antichrist lives on the earth, their perishing. There on the road to being lost. They have turned away from God and are traveling in the opposite direction along the road that leads to perdition. The word "perishing" means to be lost, to be in the process of being destroyed or ruined, corrupted and put to death. When a person is on the road to perdition their pointed in the opposite direction and traveling away from God. Breaking all ties and separating themselves; “unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” That’s what the bible teaches! That’s the truth, so help me God! Imagine being misguided and really not knowing peace a true inner peace, true assurance, security, love, joy, and confidence—all the qualities that build the very best of lives.

Satan is a master at tricking unbelievers as well as believers if they remain spiritually immature. Chapter 11 of the book of Hebrews is often referred to as the great hall of faith chapter and some of the men in this chapter such as Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses to mention just a few. They all had one thing in common; they had to choose to suffer! “Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.” Hebrews 11:25. This was one of the issues that the church of Thessalonica had to deal with; IMMATURITY! No one wants to be told there immature and usually the immature get upset when that topic presents itself.

The major truth here is that God is in control of all things, even Satan. God’s actively sending judgment on them who reject the truth. “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.” Romans 1:25 (NIV) in this chapter of Romans God gives them over to their sinful desires and shameful lust. THE LIE IS NOT GOING TO LAST!

Just a little reminder, it seems everyone will quickly finish John 3:16 for you, when you share it out lot, but what about the rest of the story: “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God." John 3:17-21

This is literally “the lie” “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.” It is because people reject the truth of the gospel that they shall suffer strong delusion and believe the lie of the antichrist. THERE IT IS “YOU CHOOSE!”

2. BELIEVE THE truth: vs. 13-17

But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now that I have got the bad news out of the way, these next 5 verses share the good news: This context is a prayer to God for initiating and electing Grace in the lives of the Thessalonian Christians. The contextual insight to the remainder of this chapter deals with the believer, and sanctification, their perseverance and encouragement.

The believers’ comfort and hope are based on the grace of God seen and enacted through Christ. The term “hope” is often used in the NT in the sense of the Second Coming. “Good hope” only comes by God’s grace. For those who believe in the truth, YOU! Love the Lord with your ALL!

The great truth of salvation is the discussion of this passage. God has chosen believers before the world was ever created, chosen them to salvation. “Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.” God wants us to be with Him. God does not want us to be judged and condemned and separated from Him. God wants us to live with Him forever and ever. “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.” John 10:28-29. WHAT ETERNAL SECURITY!

The Holy Spirit is the key to making all this work. In order to understand the truth, the Holy Spirit quickens the gospel to a person's mind so that they see it as never before. The Holy Spirit convicts a person of sin, attracts them to the cross and a "belief of the truth."

When a person really believes the truth of the gospel, God saves him. This is man's part in salvation. No person has ever been saved who did not believe the truth of the gospel. And no person who has rejected the gospel is lost because God has not chosen him. The person is lost because he rejected Christ. God will choose any person who will accept Christ. This is His Word; it is the promise of His Word. God will not force us to believe nor will He keep us from believing. The choice is every person's choice. No person is forced to receive or to reject Christ. Every person is responsible for his own decision.

The believer shall be glorified with Christ as an heir of God. Receiving a body just likes His one day, receiving a nature of glory, receiving an eternal weight of glory, appearing in the glory of heaven. “And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.”

  • “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Romans 8:18
  • “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” 2 Corinthians 4:17

Believers are encouraged to do and say good things. We are not saved by doing good things but we are saved for doing and saying good things. Our relationship with Christ must lead to Christlikeness. We were called unto good works: “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

The goal of every believer is not only heaven when we die but Christlikeness now. These good works and sayings are to help us as believers reach those who do not know our Savior.

The person who is saved receives good hope, receives comfort... John 14:1-3

Conclusion: Why is the subject of the Second Coming so debated in the Church? Is the Second Coming imminent or must certain events occur first? Does God cause people not to believe? What is “the lie”? We are to stand fast and cling to the Word of God. We are not to buckle under to the world and its enticements. We are not to cave in, as the followers of the antichrist will do. We are to stand fast and cling to the Word of God no matter the inducement and the opposition. John 3:16

“That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
