Text: Jude 1:17-25 (ESV)

17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. 24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.”

“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Habakkuk 1:5 (ESV)

Intro: A lot of Junk going on! Can I say that? Could it be easy to throw in the towel and just give up? You ever felt like you have been beaten. Is it really even necessary to make time for church anymore? I believe many of the Christians in the early church were looking for a reason to quit. If they weren’t quitting someone in the church was filling their minds with junk! False truths, stirring up stuff, causing trouble. I would love to say the church doesn’t have that problem today. However churches are allowing the devil a front set in the congregation and Biblical truths are out the window. Everything goes is the mentality, it's okay to do whatever you want God loves you. The book of Jude has a first-hand look at Apostasy. Apostasy: defined as a departure from one’s religion, corruption in the church, defection. They don’t want to pledge allegiance to the Lamb! You haven’t given up have you? This single chapter in the book of Jude is encouraging the Believer to never give up, never give in, don’t live in sin, and be victorious in Christ! GOD IS ABLE! to keep you from stumbling.

Application: God is able to keep you from falling.

1. Believers are to Build on the Word of God: Vs. 20a “But you, beloved, building yourselves up.” Let’s be transparent, it is real easy to be lured away from the church mindset. The Bible teaches us that in the end times there will be those who enjoy living in sin and having a good time. “Following their own ungodly passions.”

“There will be scoffers!” The word means to look down upon; think lightly of; act against. A mocker, cynic. In the end times there will be mockers, the Apostles predicted this. They walk after their own passions, they cause divisions, they are worldly minded. Why? They do not have the spirit. It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit” There is no dedication to the church because of the love of the world. This is a problem. The spirit isn’t in these people.

The believer must continue to hold on: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up.” Build on the Word of God.” God is at work and He wanted the prophet to know. Believers are to build on the word of God! “Jesus answered and said to them, "Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures nor the power of God?” Mark 12:24 (NKJV)

If you don’t build on the truth of the Word of God you will become weak and collapse to the immaturity of man.

“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” Habakkuk 1:5 (ESV)

Romans 12:1-2 Believers are to build on the Word of the Lord.

2. Believers are to Pray in the Power of God: vs. 20b “Praying in the Holy Spirit.”

We are reminded Faith comes through prayer! "Pray without ceasing" 1 Thessalonians 5:17

The believer builds by praying in the Spirit. This is the Holy Spirit. To pray in the Spirit means, that we pray under His guidance and influence, under His energy and power. We seek and ask His help as we approach the throne of grace. We focus our minds and concentrate upon the Holy Spirit helping us to pray, and depend upon Him to help us. We walk in the Spirit day by day and offer unbroken prayer to God all day long. "Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually."

3. Believers are to Remain in the Love of God: vs. 21 “Keep yourselves in the love of God.” The Bible encourages the believer to be compassionate and reclaim people. Encourage the doubter, have mercy on those who doubt, encourage the lost, “Save others by snatching them out of the fire” but be cautious: must guard against becoming polluted. Remain in His love and be cautious of those who are in great doubt, those who are in great danger, and those who are in great depravity.

Walk in the power of God, He is able to keep you from falling, He makes you blameless. God infuses you with unspeakable joy.

We are told that we are to keep ourselves in the love of God. Here we are told that God keeps us. What is the difference? "We must watch that we stay close to the Lord, but only He can guard us so that we do not stumble" God alone has the power to keep us from falling in a world that has so much corruption and false teaching. But for God to keep us, we must draw near Him and stay in touch with Him. If we remain in Him we will receive an inheritance: “To an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.” 1 Peter 1:4 (ESV)

Are you a branch of His vine? “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (ESV)

Remain in Him, cling to His love!

Conclusion: Believers are to build up their lives upon their holy faith. They are to study, meditate, learn, memorize, and live out the Scripture. They are to build upon what they have learned and then continue to build more and more. The only way believers can do this is to study and study the holy faith, the living Word of God. “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

God is able – are you? Are you building on His Word? Are you praying for His power? Can you remain in His love?
